I’m an outdoorsy kind of gal deep down. I mean, I adore cities with all their buzz and fun, but at the end of the day, if I was held at gunpoint and forced to choose between living in a city or the countryside forever (not that I forsee such a dramatic ultimatum but let’s roll with it), I’d choose the countryside hands down.
However. I’m way too much of a basic bitch to sacrifice my wifi and hairdryer, and I ain’t afraid to say it. Sure, I’d 100% be down for camping, but if you’re gonna offer me those comforts too, then I’m gonna take them!
And that’s where glamping comes in. Perfect happy medium that oh my, is just all kinds of heaven. It’s the very definition of the best of both worlds. In my book it is, anyway! There’s glamping, and there’s GLAMping though. Emphasis very much on glam. What campsite has private jacuzzis, huh?
So yes, I enjoyed glamping at Big Berry lifestyle resort in Slovenia very very very very much. I’d go so far as to say that I’ve never felt so strongly about not wanting to leave a place, and left dragging my bottom lip on the floor. After 4 days in Bela Krajina I still felt like there were many more experiences that I would have loved, not to mention the fact that I could happily have lived in my bungalow forever. Glamping is SO ‘me’. I’ve Instagrammed the hell out of this place already (and have no plans to stop soon), but now it’s time to give you the full low down on the blog. Guarantee you’ll fall in love with this place as much as I did! If you’ve never considered a glamping holiday before, I’m confident in my abilities to convince you that you should. Here goes. 🙂
At Big Berry, you’re treated like a super special guest right from the moment you arrive. But in a chill way. A ‘we’ll be super nice to you and make sure you have everything you need and more’ way, not a pretentious fancy way. It’s delightful. Needless to say I was chuffed to bits with my welcome basket! Everything but the beer was swiftly enjoyed, and one shower gel and one gin (the essentials) have been carefully brought home. I also ate my first of many pogaÄa right away. That bread is addictive. Food was kind of a running theme during my stay! A Big Berry experience goes way beyond the actual place to stay, and involves getting familiar with the local food, drinks and produce from Alpstories, Berryshka and more.
I’ll take a brief detour from food (more on the matter soon, don’t worry) to show you the my mini house. Loved having a place to myself for a few days, not gonna lie! They’re very much Tardis buildings. Not so mini on the inside, at all. Apparently they’ve been specially designed to make the best possible use of space and have tons of storage room, which was typical for the one occasion on which I’ve been travelling light. I squished a minimal amount of stuff into a carry on suitcase, and had a 2 floor to ceiling wardrobes and about 7 cupboards. Life eh. But yes, I could quite contentedly live in one of these and not feel cramped in the slightest.
Everything had that eco modern feel to it, especially the huge shower with wooden floor. Gotta love a fluffy white bathrobe too! Speaking of bathroom stuff, the good hairdryer was very much appreciated - the rain gave my hair a Hagrid-esque look so I needed all the help I could get.
Of course I can’t NOT mention the hot tub. Yes to having it literally on your doorstep! Hey, you can even take a midnight naked dip if you feel so inclined. ;) In summer it’s apparently perfect to alternate between cooling off in the river and soaking in the tub at night, and OMG I’d love to experience the summer months there. My Slovenia trip was in September and the weather wasn’t *that* warm, so I passed on a river dip. You’d have had to drag me out of there in 38 degree July though.
Back to food! If you follow the ‘breakfast like a king’ rule, then you’re definitely in the right place. Fresh pastries and breads (still warm!), loads of fruit, local honey that tastes a million times better than the supermarket stuff, hot chocolate, spreads, jams, dates, muesli… my Weetabix haven’t tasted the same since. They surprise you with a different combo every day delivered to your doorstep at 8am. All local and fresh and all that jazz, of course. We spent time visiting some of the actual producers – more on that in Slovenia part 2! ‘Breakfast’ was incredibly generous for one meal and I saved loads to snack on throughout the day.
My 4 days in Slovenia were crammed pretty full with lots of fun stuff, but the resort had perfect lounging places too. Beds in a field, people. Outdoor beds. And swings and comfy chairs and egg-shaped pods dangling from trees. It’s the perfect mix of feeling like you’re in an unspoiled part of nature, but with everything you need at your fingertips. Just don’t make the mistake of sitting on a cushioned chair after it’s been raining like I did. Soggy bum isn’t sexy.
In keeping with the green, local and healthy feeling going on, fitness is part of the package too. Workouts are usually done on site but the trainer had injured his shoulder (plus those metal bars were prettyyyy cold first thing!) so we headed to a nearby gym. I was very happy to get my boxing on. 😀
Evan – also a travel blogger – is a chef, so the guys at Big Berry organised a group masterchef challenge for us on my first afternoon with one of her recipes. Food tastes better when it’s been cooked on a big barbecue on a chilled out Sunday afternoon, don’t you know.
Pretty much my only complaint is that I couldn’t spend all summer there. Glamping, I love you!
Hopefully I’ve succeeded in tempting you to book a glamping holiday. Especially if you’re a fellow nature bum who likes a bit of a treat! Slovenia is so up and coming as a holiday destination and I can 100% see why. Everyone’s so friendly too. I’d have loved my time there anyway, but the Big Berry team and everyone I met just made the whole thing even more fun and laughs. You guys. <3 Stay tuned for Slovenia part 2, I’ll be sharing more of the fun in and around Bela Krajina soon!
My stay at Big Berry lifestyle resort was complimentary, but all words and opinions are my own. I just frickin loved it there, OK? 😀

27th September 2016 at 7:35 amOh my, this looks amazing. I haven’t really considered myself the camping type but this truly looks wonderful. I love the outdoors and really like this combines the best of both. Also I am one of those people who hates missing the gym so the fitness options look amazing!
Love this!

27th September 2016 at 1:34 pmIt was amazing and more 😀 Not camping in the slightest tbh, more like having an apartment with delivery! I hate missing the gym when I’m aay too as it feels like hard work beforehand has gone to waste – having a fitness option whilst you’re away is great 😀

5th October 2016 at 2:42 pmThis place looks unbelievable! I’ve always wanted to try glamping since I learned about it last year, but I’ve never found a place that demanded I book a trip. That and my husband is much more of a camping guy. I might be able to convince him to head to Slovenia for this, it just looks too incredible to miss!

6th October 2016 at 9:47 amIt sure was! Hopefully I’ve managed to tempt you into booking one. I’m sure your husband won’t take much persuasion – how can you turn down the countryside AND luxury? 😀
